CA Orders Elon Musk's AI Firm to Immediately Stop Sharing Sexual Deepfakes
""numerous examples of xAI taking ordinary, clothed images of women and children" and allowing users "to depict the people in suggestive and sexually explicit scenarios and 'undress' them, all without the subjects' knowledge or consent.""
""The avalanche of reports detailing the non-consensual sexually explicit material that xAI has produced and posted online in recent weeks is shocking," Bonta wrote Wednesday. "This material... has been used to harass people across the internet. I urge xAI to take immediate action to ensure this goes no further.""
""consequences""
California Attorney General Rob Bonta sent a cease and desist ordering xAI to stop producing and distributing nonconsensual sexual images. Bonta cited numerous examples of ordinary, clothed images of women and children being used to depict undressing and sexually explicit scenarios without consent. The imagery allegedly violates state public decency rules and a new deepfake pornography law that took effect two weeks earlier. Bonta acknowledged some steps by xAI to limit Grok uses but said their impact remains unclear. He opened an investigation into xAI and X and urged victims to report abuses. Bloomberg research found Grok-generated posts featured more nonconsensual sexual imagery than any other site, and Elon Musk promised consequences for illegal creators while xAI did not respond to questions about the probe.
