Seven candidates for California governor debated at the Julia Morgan Ballroom in San Francisco before the June 2 primary. Several candidates targeted Xavier Becerra, citing an embezzlement case linked to people who worked for him that concluded on Thursday. The attacks also followed Becerra’s sharp rise in the polls after Eric Swalwell left the race. Candidates criticized Becerra’s position on single-payer healthcare after he received an endorsement from the California Medical Association. Tom Steyer said Becerra spoke to a major lobbying group against single-payer and that the group’s head indicated Becerra opposed single-payer.
