California Attorney General Rob Bonta spent $468,000 in campaign funds on legal representation while being interviewed by federal authorities investigating Oakland's former mayor and others in a sprawling bribery and corruption inquiry. Senior advisor Dan Newman said the legal bills funded attorneys who provided information that could be helpful to the investigation and that Bonta was never a target. Newman said the AG's involvement is over and that the required attorney work ended in 2024. Newman initially described the spending as helping law enforcement pursue justice, then said the funds covered attorneys for Bonta while questioned. Bonta retained Wilson Sonsini, a high-rate Silicon Valley firm, and a political science professor called the bills historically large.
