After two hung juries, Oakland murder case goes down in flames
""Both juries were very smart and took their jobs very seriously," Chakravorty said in a message to this news organization. "Without question, though, a man lost his life and a family is grieving. I truly express my condolences to the family for their loss.""

Elijah Rucker, 35, was charged with murdering 4-year-old Romell Wright after Wright was shot on Jan. 7, 2024, on the 1700 block of 89th Avenue in Oakland. Prosecutors said Rucker confronted Wright about an outstanding debt after a group had spent the night crowded into a small sedan and using drugs, then shot him. Two juries deadlocked and failed to reach a verdict, and prosecutors dropped the murder charge at a November hearing. Rucker pleaded no contest to a firearm charge, was sentenced to 32 months, and was admitted to North Kern State Prison on Dec. 2. Defense attorney Pinaki Chakravorty said Rucker was misidentified after a rumor began when one witness overheard Wright's fiancée say "Eli" and repeated it to police, and Chakravorty offered condolences to the family.
