Eleven people were trapped in a cave along the Santa Cruz coastline near Davenport after rising tides cut off their exit. A 911 text reported the group was stuck and the water was rising shortly before 8 p.m. Some trapped people did not know how to swim. Responders from CAL FIRE, Santa Cruz County Fire, the Coast Guard, local lifeguards, Harbor Patrol, and State Parks lifeguards arrived at Panther State Beach. The cave had two possible exits, one through water to a beach with access to bluffs and another onto a pocket beach with a trail too steep to climb. Five swimmers waded out with lifeguard assistance, three non-swimmers were hoisted by the Coast Guard to a bluff, and the remaining individuals escaped on their own. Authorities urged visitors to check tide charts and move to the highest safe point, calling 911 instead of climbing unstable cliffs or swimming in heavy surf.
