Police responded to a large, preplanned gathering of over 300 juveniles at the Streets of Brentwood mall. The crowd quickly turned chaotic as some individuals pushed merchandise off shelves, ran into traffic, and engaged in physical fights. Dispersal orders were given, leading to early closure of businesses to protect staff and property. Four juveniles were arrested for misdemeanors, while one was detained for assaulting an officer. A high-risk vehicle stop was conducted, but no firearms were found. An investigation is ongoing, with police seeking information from witnesses.
According to the Brentwood Police Department, officers were dispatched Friday afternoon to the Streets of Brentwood, an outdoor mall on Sand Creek Road. They received reports that a "large preplanned gathering" was taking place there, and over the course of the afternoon police said over 300 juveniles "from outside the area" arrived in cars and rideshare vehicles.
Some juveniles began pushing merchandise off shelves, running erratically into traffic and starting "physical fights" around the property. As the gathering became destructive and disruptive, dispersal orders were given for everyone involved to leave the property and to clear surrounding streets.
Four juveniles were arrested for misdemeanors and one was taken into custody for an alleged assault on a peace officer. Law enforcement from Oakley, the Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office and California Highway Patrol also assisted in clearing the crowds.
At some point during this rapidly evolving incident, officers performed a high risk stop on a vehicle, with their duty weapons drawn, because it was reported the driver had a firearm; however, no firearms were found and no arrests were made.
