13 California county employees accused of making fraudulent claims for COVID relief funds
"It is shocking that these county employees that are receiving their county check every two weeks are telling EDD that we are unemployed and are receiving no money."
"When a civil servant steals from the government, that trust is broken."
"Most egregiously, these individuals allegedly claimed to be unemployed during the COVID pandemic when millions of Californians were legitimately in need of unemployment benefits."
Thirteen Los Angeles County employees are charged with grand theft and a lesser misdemeanor for allegedly applying for and receiving over $437,000 in state unemployment benefits between 2020 and 2023 while remaining employed and paid by the county. The individuals reportedly received between $9,000 and more than $50,000 each. They allegedly submitted unemployment insurance claims under penalty of perjury asserting earnings under $600 per week for each two-week claim period. Five defendants worked for the Department of Children and Family Services and three for the Department of Public Social Services; others worked across multiple county departments. Each faces up to three years in state prison if convicted. The county Auditor-Controller’s investigative office is continuing to look for additional involvement.
