This Virginia Suburb Has The Highest Concentration Of Fortune 1000 Companies Of Any City
"Many smaller cities attract large companies through a combination of lower taxes, affordable real estate, access to skilled labor, investment in infrastructure, and proximity to key markets. Cities like McLean, Virginia, and Reston, Virginia have attracted large defense contractors and financial firms who may benefit from proximity to Washington, D.C., while Delaware attracts a disproportionate number of Fortune 1000 companies through its business-friendly tax environment."
"To determine the cities with the most Fortune 1000 companies per capita, 24/7 Wall St. reviewed data on corporate headquarters from Fortune and population from the U.S. Census Bureau. Cities were ranked based on the number of Fortune 1000 headquarters located in their boundaries per 100,000 residents. Data on population are from the U.S. Census Bureau's 2023 American Community Survey and are five-year estimates. Only cities with at least five Fortune 1000 firms were considered."
The Fortune 1000 ranks the 1,000 largest U.S. companies by revenue. Large cities host the most firms by scale, yet many smaller cities show much higher per-capita concentrations. New York City has 0.7 Fortune 1000 firms per 100,000 residents, while several cities exceed ten times that rate. Factors attracting headquarters include lower taxes, affordable real estate, skilled labor, infrastructure investment, and proximity to key markets. Areas such as McLean and Reston, Virginia, benefit from proximity to Washington, D.C., and Delaware draws firms with a business-friendly tax environment. Rankings use Fortune headquarters data and 2023 ACS population estimates.
