Standard Chartered To Absorb Zodia Custody's Core Business In Digital Asset Consolidation
"Peers have moved in the same direction: BNY Mellon launched its Digital Asset Custody platform in 2022, and Morgan Stanley applied for a national trust bank charter in early 2026 to bring crypto custody inside a regulated banking framework."
Standard Chartered announced that its non-binding offer to acquire Zodia Custody has been accepted by Zodia’s shareholders and noteholders, subject to regulatory approvals. The transaction will integrate Zodia’s regulated custody operations into Standard Chartered’s Financing and Securities Services business. The move functions as a strategic reorganization rather than a traditional acquisition, bringing client-facing custody capabilities back under the parent bank after market maturity. Zodia was created in 2020 through SC Ventures to manage regulatory uncertainty and reputational risk, later attracting minority investors and expanding across multiple offices. The consolidation reduces duplication with Standard Chartered’s existing overlapping digital asset custody offerings and strengthens its position as a globally integrated, regulated crypto custodian.
