Jewellery boss in 170m scam told shop staff to pretend to be customers
"This is bigger than Hatton Garden, Brink's-Mat and the Great Train Robbery combined,"
"Vashi is very dynamic, he's a very charismatic character. He was almost like the Pied Piper of jewellery retail,"
"Vashi was quite a magnetic individual,"
Staff were instructed to pose as customers to dupe investors into providing fresh cash to Vashi Dominguez, enabling a scheme that collapsed in 2023 with £170m of debts. Investors were promised a retail-chain stock valued at £157m but later found to be worth about £100,000, leaving them with total losses. Vashi disappeared after the collapse. Both the Metropolitan Police and the Serious Fraud Squad decided not to investigate. Former shop staff, investors, and financial experts are examining company records and testimonies to reconstruct how the deception attracted so many victims. Vashi cultivated a high-profile public image and expanded into High Street stores.
