In the face of a lousy job market, many Gen Zers are taking the leap into solopreneurship
"I thought maybe in three, four years, I'll be in her place. And she got laid off,"
"After that [career] roadblock, I was really struggling to figure out my next step. It felt like I was staring at a blank wall,"
"Now there is more stability. Even though there is not a lot of money in it, there is a confidence that I will get there. Things felt harder before."
"I actually made a few sales through ChatGPT, People are searching for my niche on ChatGPT, and I have been seeing a lot of traffic come from it."
Odyssey Gohain, 27, worked as a marketer in Amsterdam when ChatGPT began replacing individual tasks and team members, and she was laid off soon after. She returned home in 2023 and launched an independent marketing business as a solopreneur. Two years later she earns less than in her previous role but reports greater stability and renewed confidence. ChatGPT plays a direct role in her business by generating leads and replacing online search, producing traffic and some sales. Broader trends show younger workers de-emphasizing corporate advancement; a Citizens survey of 2,300 Americans aged 18–34 found only 25% interested in climbing the corporate ladder.
