"According to a post on his website by his family, Banatao passed away peacefully on Christmas Day, surrounded by family and friends. His family said he succumbed to complications from a neurological disorder that hit him late in his life. He would have been 80 in May. His family wrote, We are mourning his loss, but take comfort from the time spent with him during this Christmas season, and that his fight with this disease is over."
Diosdado "Dado" Banatao rose from a rural childhood in Iguig, Cagayan, to become a leading technology entrepreneur. He was born to a rice farmer and housekeeper, learned math without electricity, and continued schooling when peers left for farm work. He earned an electrical engineering degree at Mapua Institute of Technology, moved to the U.S. for a master's at Stanford, and worked as a design engineer at Boeing. He co-founded three technology companies, pioneered technologies that enabled personal computers, and helped advance semiconductor and graphics industries. He founded a nonprofit to support Filipinos in STEM, mentored founders, and invested in community building. He died at 79 on Christmas Day from complications of a late-life neurological disorder.
