Failed Everton bidder Wander charged with fraud

"Wander, of Miami, Florida, is charged with one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, one count of wire fraud, and one count of securities fraud, each of which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. He is also charged with one count of conspiracy to commit securities fraud, which carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison. Wander's lawyer Jordan Estes said he denied all charges, telling Bloomberg: "This is a business dispute dressed up as a criminal case. We look forward to setting the record straight.""

Josh Wander, co-founder of 777 Partners, has been charged with defrauding lenders and investors of more than $500 million by using falsified financial documents and pledging assets the firm did not own. Prosecutors allege the misconduct began in 2018 as Wander expanded into riskier sectors such as streaming platforms, airlines, and professional sports clubs while concealing that funds were lacking or already pledged. A proposed 777 Partners takeover of Everton collapsed in June 2024. Federal charges include conspiracy to commit wire fraud, wire fraud, securities fraud, and conspiracy to commit securities fraud, carrying potential decades-long sentences. Wander denies the allegations.
