The company did not disclose the size of the deal in financial terms. The Chinese government, which has yet to comment on the deal, has been courting foreign retail companies in recent years."
Avolta, a Swiss-based global leader in airport duty free and operator of Hudson in the U.S., secured the first mainland China duty-free contract for an international operator in 26 years. The contract grants rights to open 43 stores and restaurants across duty free, duty paid, and food and beverage categories at Shanghai Pudong International Airport, covering over 85,000 sq ft (8,000 m2). Avolta operates over 5,000 stores in more than 1,000 locations worldwide and reported CHF 13.7 billion in full year 2024 sales. The company built a local team over three and a half years to develop market know-how while China courts foreign retail investment.
