Gen Z is questioning the value of expensive business degrees as recent graduates struggle to find jobs and top programs can cost over $150,000. Judy Faulkner never earned an MBA and credits that choice with enabling an unconventional approach that avoided venture capital, public offerings, formal budgets, and acquisitions. Epic Systems began in a Wisconsin basement in 1979 and now generates approximately $5.7 billion annually, driving Faulkner's net worth above $7.8 billion. Epic adheres to a set of principles, including not going public, not acquiring or being acquired, and insisting that software must work.
I never got an MBA, which I think is a really good thing," Faulkner recently told .
'They would have taught me, 'Here's how you do venture capital.' We didn't do it. 'Here's how you go public.' We didn't do it. 'Here's how you do budgets.' We don't have budgets. We say, if you need it, buy it. If you don't need it, don't buy it.
They include 'do not go public,' 'do not acquire or be acquired,' and 'software must work.'
