An independent consultant shares why he opted out of climbing the corporate ladder
"I started out my career at Accenture, so I went through the graduate machine there, did my training, my time in the trenches, and enjoyed that experience. Accenture is a huge consulting company, and it's a great place to cut your teeth. But with all of those large, tier-one and tier-two consulting firms, they come with a certain culture and a certain way of working."
"I've been independent since 2014. A lot of people say I'm kind of an independent consulting thoroughbred, in the sense that I haven't really ever had too much of a long, permanent career. The last decade has been spent going from client to client. I've been lucky enough to have client relationships that have lasted four or five years and never really had to have a break between those contracts."
Will Oakley began his career at Accenture, completing graduate training and early consulting work. He left corporate consulting to pursue independent consulting in 2014, driven by an entrepreneurial impulse and desire to build a portfolio of clients rather than climb a corporate ladder. He has moved between clients over the last decade, often securing multi-year engagements and rolling from one contract to the next without breaks. He partners with firms such as the Barton Partnership to access pipeline and assemble teams, while also using his own prospecting, network, and recommendations. He is developing a network-based consulting model that forms teams to serve clients.
