American distilled spirits are becoming a high-profile target for retaliation amid a costly cold shoulder from Canada | Fortune
"Even though things have eased up, we still are not back on the shelf in Canada,"
"Probably won't be for a good long while."
"There's a growing concern that our international consumers are increasingly opting for domestically produced spirits or imports from countries other than the U.S., signaling a shift away from our great American spirits brands,"
American spirits exports declined 9% in the second quarter of 2025 compared with a year earlier after a strong 2024 year. Exports to Canada plunged 85% earlier in the year as most Canadian provinces continue to ban American spirits from shelves despite removal of retaliatory tariffs. Sharp declines also occurred in the European Union, United Kingdom and Japan. First-quarter 2025 exports rose 1% year-over-year. Distillers express concern that consumer shifts toward domestic or non-U.S. imports and lingering market barriers could prolong reduced demand for American spirits.
