The NBA's new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) has shifted team strategies, especially making first-round draft picks crucial for rebuilding teams. The Brooklyn Nets are currently positioned with the most future picks, including 15 first-round selections. With analytics driving decisions, these picks provide teams a better chance to change their fortunes. The Nets tanked this season to secure valuable picks and might consider trading them for star players, highlighting a significant change in drafting strategy since the odds for lottery picks were flattened in 2019.
"When a perceived high-value class comes along - this is a great example - analytics tell a certain story to teams, and that is that there's nothing like a high draft pick if you want to change your fortunes and rebuild your team," NBA commissioner Adam Silver said on the 'Numbers On The Board' podcast.
"In some cases, you have fans saying to teams, 'What are you doing? You don't want to finish in the middle of the pack. You're better off the worse.' That used to never be the case in the old days," Silver said.
