"will assist in evaluating the feasibility of ferry service for different or larger vessels better suited for these conditions, as well as whether alternate wave mitigation structures could make ferry service to Coney Island Beach more financially achievable."
"Shout-out to my colleague and partner on all things Coney Island Ferry [Scarcella-Spanton] for working on this with me. Let's go!!!"
A research buoy has been deployed off Steeplechase Pier to collect wind and wave data to assess the feasibility of ferry service to Coney Island. The buoy deployment is coordinated by the New York City Economic Development Corporation and aims to inform vessel suitability and potential wave mitigation solutions. Earlier efforts at Coney Island Creek involved dredging, environmental concerns, and fines, and were halted due to safety, navigational issues, and local opposition. An oceanside landing was later abandoned as prohibitively costly and logistically challenging. The current data collection seeks to determine whether a safe, sustainable, and financially achievable ferry route is possible.
