U.S. Halts Temporary Protection Status For Haitians
Briefly

The U.S. government announced the end of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitian nationals, effective September 2, 2025. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem stated that conditions in Haiti have improved enough to allow for safe returns. Murad Awawdeh from the New York Immigration Coalition voiced strong objections, emphasizing the dangers of deporting Haitians back to instability and labeling the decision as politically motivated and inhumane. With over 125,000 Haitians in New York, advocates are urging Congressional leaders to secure permanent protections for TPS holders amidst growing concerns about their future.
"This decision restores integrity in our immigration system and ensures that Temporary Protective Status is actually temporary," said a DHS spokesperson.
"This move threatens the futures of Haitian New Yorkers who have lived, worked, raised families, and built their lives here," said Murad Awawdeh.
"Forcibly removing them and sending them back to the instability and violence they once fled is brutal and inhumane," said the New York Immigration Coalition's CEO.
"Haitians are our family members, neighbors, our healthcare workers, our business owners-people who are vital to the social and economic fabric of New York," Awawdeh added.
