Late Saturday night, a Mexican navy tall ship, Cuauhtémoc, collided with the Brooklyn Bridge during its goodwill visit to New York City, leading to screams from witnesses. The ship lost power and struck the bridge around 8:30 p.m., causing serious injuries to 19 individuals, four critically. Eyewitnesses described the incident as terrifying and surreal, with people expressing concern for the crew members, some of whom fell from the masts due to the impact. Despite the chaos, many expressed relief that the situation wasn't worse.
"We were all joyful, and they departed. And when they reached the Brooklyn Bridge, I believe they hit the bridge and the top collapsed. We were very scared."
"It's kind of surreal to see, a little scary for everyone involved. Luckily we were on the ferry a couple hundred feet ahead, so we weren't concerned for our safety but we were concerned for the people we could see."
