Tensions Rise in Brooklyn's Sunset Park Over Charter School Plans
Briefly

On June 17, 2025, the CEC15 voted to repeal the use of public funds for charter school facilities, sparking debate as Brooklyn Rise Charter School prepares to return to Sunset Park. Originally opened in 2019, the school relocated to Downtown Brooklyn in 2022 but promised families a return. Local public school parents and advocates oppose the charter's re-establishment, citing sufficient existing public schools that serve the community effectively amidst declining enrollment. Critics emphasize that resources should support current schools rather than fund new charter facilities, arguing that the existing programs sufficiently meet local needs.
I'm really livid about the situation. Our community didn't work so hard for so many years to achieve great strides concerning our public schools, only to be thrown under the bus. There's a clear relationship between enrollment and public funding for our public schools.
We don't need more schools that are not offering anything unique. We have plenty of long-standing schools and new schools that are addressing a lot of the needs that we need.
