Storm Floods Threaten Clinton Hill Businesses
"I knew that my child was safe, but this is my other child,"
"The water came so fast that we couldn't stop it. The glass doorframe broke from the pressure."
"It's absurd,"
"Running a small business in New York is already hard enough. Now I have to think about what furniture will survive the next flood."
A torrential storm produced a wall of water that shattered the double glass doors of Private Picassos, a 2,000-square-foot basement art studio on Grand Avenue in Clinton Hill, and flooded the space within ten minutes. Owner Valeen Bhat stood in knee-deep water as her nearly 20-year-old business suffered ruined materials, warped floors, destroyed doors, and weeks of forced closure during the busiest season. Bhat had moved the studio in 2024 and previously spent thousands on repairs, sump pumps, and sandbags after earlier seepage. The fire department cut power and rescued children. Residents report clogged storm drains and overwhelmed sewers.
