The Uncommon Collegiate Charter High School debate team has made a remarkable debut in the Brooklyn Debate League, led by juniors Laud Olufade and Mackenzie Pettiford. Olufade's achievements include qualifying for the NCFL Nationals, while both he and Pettiford excelled in state championships. Their success is attributed to rigorous preparation and a focus on building confidence. The team's formation is part of Uncommon Schools' initiative to nurture student talents. Olufade emphasized the importance of thoughtful argumentation in debate, while Pettiford spoke on the necessity of self-assuredness for making an impact.
"Debate is not about 'You're wrong, I'm right. It's 'I'm right, but here's why'," says junior Laud Olufade, highlighting the essence of productive dialogue in debate.
"Confidence is the key to being good," states Mackenzie Pettiford, emphasizing the importance of self-belief and impact in competitive debate.
