"This is the largest ever order of subway cars in our history. More than 2,300 subway cars total. We are, in this one procurement, going to replace roughly a third of the entire MTA subway fleet."
"The shiny, technologically advanced trains, dubbed R262s, will replace the R62s and R62As—stainless steel cars with retro orange and yellow seats that have run on the 1, 3, and 6 lines since the 1980s. The RFP includes an option for another 1,250 cars, which would be swapped in for the R142s and R142As that run on the 2, 4, and 5 lines."
"The base order is funded by the MTA's $68 billion 2026-2029 Capital Program, which Gov. Kathy Hochul approved last year. However, straphangers will not actually get to christen seats on the new cars until at least 2030."
The MTA released a Request for Proposals for 1,140 new R262 subway cars, marking the largest single order in the agency's history. These technologically advanced trains will replace aging R62, R62A, R142, and R142A cars that have operated since the 1980s on the 1, 3, 6, 2, 4, and 5 lines. An optional order of 1,250 additional cars would replace approximately one-third of the entire MTA subway fleet. The base order is funded through the MTA's $68 billion 2026-2029 Capital Program approved by Governor Kathy Hochul. Contractors must submit design proposals by September 2026, with new cars expected to enter service no earlier than 2030.
