Public Defender Launches Campaign For NY-7
"This campaign is about more than winning a seat - it's about restoring confidence that government can work for working people. We need bold ideas, and we need leaders who understand how to implement them."
"In our communities, ICE is tearing apart families with impunity and democratic norms are being undermined in plain sight. This moment calls for more than rhetoric."
Vichal Kumar, a public defender and son of working-class immigrants, announced his congressional campaign for New York's 7th District at an event in Bushwick. With over two decades of experience representing immigrants, tenants, and low-income New Yorkers, Kumar emphasized that his campaign aims to restore public confidence in government serving working people. He highlighted urgent issues including ICE enforcement separating families and erosion of democratic norms, calling for substantive action beyond rhetoric. Previously serving as president of the South Asian Bar Association, Kumar plans to organize across Brooklyn and Queens throughout the race.
