Residents in South Brooklyn, particularly from Sheepshead Bay, are protesting against a planned homeless shelter at 2134 Coyle St. due to unmet expectations regarding affordable housing. Opposition intensified since March, with prominent community members, including politicians, joining in daily protests that have led to arrests. A large march took place on May 4, featuring close to 1,000 attendees, including local officials who criticized Mayor Eric Adams for pushing the shelter initiative without community engagement, highlighting frustrations over the perceived 'bait and switch' tactics of city planning.
"At no time was a shelter proposed or presented to the Community Board or the City Council prior to the vote on approval for this project," Vernikov said.
"This is how they operate. They promise affordable housing, then suddenly, at the last minute, it becomes a homeless shelter - without any meetings, no town halls, and no input from the people who live here," Sliwa said.
