Prospect Park swans injured by dog return to the wild after lengthy recovery * Brooklyn Paper
"Two juvenile swans who were rescued from Prospect Park after an apparent dog attack are back home after a lengthy stint at the Wild Bird Fund. Looking almost good as new, the eight-month-old cygnets were returned to the park's lake on Jan. 11, nearly a month after a group of volunteer wildlife observers called "The Swan Squad" brought them to the clinic with bloody head and eye wounds."
"The larger swan, who rehabbers named Wazowski, was left with a large gash above the right eye and a fairly severe infection, Frank said. Wazowski was treated with antibiotics, and rehabbers had to debride the wound, suture it closed, then open it back up to debride it again later in the healing process. Plankton, the smaller swan, had a smaller wound that was debrided and stitched, not sutured. The bird also had an ulcer on its eye, Frank said, which was treated twice-daily eyedrops."
Two eight-month-old cygnets were rescued from Prospect Park after an apparent off-leash dog attack and brought to the Wild Bird Fund with bloody head and eye wounds. Both birds had wounds to the right side of the head and developed infections by the time they were rescued about two days after the attack. The larger swan, Wazowski, sustained a large gash and a severe infection requiring antibiotics, debridement, and repeat wound care. The smaller swan, Plankton, received debridement, stitches, and twice-daily eyedrops for an eye ulcer. Both regained swimming ability in the clinic pool but experienced weight loss despite appetite stimulants. The siblings were returned to the park's lake on Jan. 11 after recovery and continued monitoring.
