On Fat Tuesday, Littlefield, a Brooklyn venue owned by women Julie Kim and Scott Koshnoodi, hosted Brass Queens, an all-female brass ensemble. Having opened 15 years ago, Littlefield is a culturally significant venue, renowned for its diverse events, from concerts to comedy. Former environmental engineers, Kim and Koshnoodi transformed a 1920s printing press into a vibrant green space. The performance by Brass Queens, echoing New Orleans' festive traditions, highlighted the venue's role in honoring cultural celebrations.
This became our 'little field,' Kim continued. 'We also loved the idea that the word itself lends itself to being small, but then you enter the venue, and it isn't a little venue at all.'
Brass Queens includes trumpet player Stephanie King; percussionist Ashley Baier; bandleader, co-founder and trumpet player Alex Harris; co-founder Ally Chapel; trombone, sousaphone and electric bass player Stephanie Young; tuba player Nora Nalepka; trumpet player Minerva Johnson; percussionist Caitlin Cawley; saxophonist, guitarist, bassist and songwriter Jenna Murdoch; and Elizabeth Arce.
We were former environmental engineers, and we wanted to create our own green space at our previous location, said Kim.
The brass ensemble's sound is deeply inspired by the New Orleans tradition, according to its website, making the group ideal for the conclusion of Mardi Gras.
