Op-Ed | Elevating Latine studies in a time of erasure * Brooklyn Paper
Briefly

New York City's initiative for 2024 aims to incorporate Latine culture and history into school curricula, with a new educational framework funded by the City Council. This is in response to systemic erasure faced by Latine students, who constitute a significant demographic in the schools. The program will engage community input to create a culturally responsive curriculum, recognizing its importance for enhancing student achievement and relations. Additionally, addressing high dropout rates by integrating culturally relevant teaching is seen as essential for systemic educational change.
At a time when efforts to erase identities from classrooms have become commonplace, we say no. Not in New York City. Imagine being one of the over four hundred thousand students in NYC schools today who identify as Latine.
In 2024 the City Council took a historic first step towards incorporating Latinidad culture and history into NYC schools by funding the development of a new Latine Studies educational framework.
Studies show that when students see themselves and their peers in their studies there is an increase in student achievement and better peer relationships.
High-quality, culturally responsive curricular resources are not a solution for all of the problems, but they are a precondition for systemic change.
