New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced a significant allocation of over $32 million for the Department of Sanitation's fiscal year 2026 budget. This funding aims to enhance cleanliness in city parks, particularly over weekends, by expanding evening park cleaning teams. Neighborhood parks in Brooklyn, such as Canarsie Park and Prospect Park, will see increased staffing. This funding model aims to provide consistent sanitation services, moving away from previous one-year funding cycles that threatened cleanliness programs.
"Today, we are making life in New York City cleaner and safer," said Adams. "In addition to our streets, our parks are critical to the fabric of our neighborhoods and to the families who live in those communities."
"New Yorkers deserve clean streets day after day, year after year - and cleanliness shouldn't be held hostage to annual one-shot funding," said DSNY Acting Commissioner Javier Lojan.
