New musical 'The Royal Pyrate' tells a swashbuckling love story in Red Hook * Brooklyn Paper
Briefly

'The Royal Pyrate' is a new musical that reimagines the story of pirate Sam Bellamy and his love, Mary Hallett. It will be performed at the Waterfront Museum starting August 16, featuring a cast of four and a band of six musicians. Creators Jason Landon Marcus and Chas LiBretto have spent over a decade crafting the show, inspired by the folklore surrounding the couple. The music is designed to reflect the period, using acoustic instruments, blending influences from various musical styles akin to the pirate era's cultural melting pot.
Marcus and LiBretto have been working on the show for more than a decade, drawn in by 'something at the heart of the story.'
I wanted [the music] to be kind of believable to the period,' Marcus said. 'It's acoustic instruments, fiddle, accordion, upright bass.'
There are influences from English ballads, Irish and Celtic music, Caribbean calypso,' he said. 'When you think of the pirate era, it was really quite a cultural melting pot.'
