The 2022-2023 flu season has marked a devastating period for pediatric health in the U.S., with 216 deaths reported among children, the most since the swine flu pandemic. The overall impact of the flu this season includes an estimated 47 million illnesses, 610,000 hospitalizations, and 26,000 deaths. New York State specifically recorded its highest pediatric death toll from flu, prompting health officials to stress the importance of vaccination as a preventive measure, particularly since only one of the deceased children had received the flu vaccine.
More U.S. children died this flu season than at any time since the swine flu pandemic 15 years ago, according to a federal report released Friday.
The CDC estimated overall at least 47 million illnesses, 610,000 hospitalizations and 26,000 deaths from flu so far this season.
'The best protection for these little ones is for all those around them to be up to date with the flu vaccine,' said New York State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald.
Figures from the state Health Department show that as of April 26, 25 children across the state died of a flu-related illness this past influenza season.
