More than 140,000, and counting, lab-confirmed flu cases reported this season
"CITYWIDE - THE CITY DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH reported more than 140,000 laboratory-confirmed flu cases so far this respiratory virus season, with children under 18 accounting for 52% of infections, according to new data released Thursday. Between Jan. 11 and Jan. 17, more than 3,600 flu cases were reported, a decline from the prior week. After a holiday spike, flu-related emergency room visits and hospitalizations also dropped."
"Health officials warned that the flu season can last through early May and urged New Yorkers to remain vigilant. About 1,500 and 2,000 New Yorkers die from the flu each year. Influenza is very contagious and about 20-30% of people carrying the virus don't display any symptoms. The high rate of flu infections joins similarly high rates of COVID-19 and RSV infections. The DOH encourages New Yorkers to get vaccinated, wash hands frequently and stay home when sick."
