City Council Member Susan Zhuang is seeking re-election in District 43 against Independent challenger Jerry Chan. Both candidates are Chinese immigrants who arrived in their teens. Zhuang has a background in academia while Chan has military and community service experience. Despite a conservative-leaning voter base, both candidates aim to address local issues like affordable housing and education programs. Chan has taken a leave from his financial job to focus on his campaign, emphasizing necessary changes in the district's direction.
Chan believes affordable housing is important, but believes a better funding formula should be figured out. He also wants schools to have more Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) programs that will lead to more jobs for future generations.
Both Zhuang and Chan are immigrants from China and came to the United States as teenagers. Zhuang enrolled as an international student at the State University of New York at Oswego and later attended the University of Southern Indiana to get a master's degree.
