During a forum hosted by CUNY SLU on April 16, NYC mayoral candidates discussed immigration policy and its implications for local communities. Key figures like Michael Blake emphasized maintaining and enhancing sanctuary laws amidst federal pressure, advocating for protections for vulnerable immigrants. While some candidates supported legislation for delivery workers, the overall focus remained on safeguarding immigrant safety and rights. Notably absent were prominent political figures like Mayor Eric Adams and former Governor Andrew Cuomo, raising questions about their stance on these critical issues.
ICE has no business here, whether it be at Rikers, whether in our places of worship, whether we have schools. We are a sanctuary city; we will continue to be a sanctuary city. We will make sure that our communities are protected in every possible way. All of us are intertwined at this moment.
Our focus again has to be on supporting and protecting our immigrant communities, ensuring that they feel safe and secure in their own neighborhoods.
