"She's fantastic at bringing people together, across lines of difference, not only to combat hate, but to build a city of justice and dignity for all. Where Jews, and everyone else, feel safe, are respected, and can thrive in this marvelous cacophony we call home."
"It is difficult to understand how someone who has spent years publicly antagonizing yeshivas could build the relationships or provide the reassurance needed for the community most often targeted by antisemitic attacks."
Mayor Zohran Mamdani appointed Phylisa Wisdom as executive director of the Mayor's Office to Combat Antisemitism. Wisdom previously served as executive director of the New York Jewish Agenda, advocating for Jewish New Yorkers in state and local politics. Several Jewish progressives and groups, including J Street, Rep. Jerry Nadler, Comptroller Mark Levine and former Comptroller Brad Lander, praised the appointment. Concerns arose because Wisdom has worked on promoting secular education in yeshivas, which has created tension with religious Jewish communities. Questions also emerged about her ability to navigate Israel-Palestine and Gaza tensions and what definition of antisemitism the city will use.
