A tragic incident occurred when the Mexican navy training vessel Cuauhtémoc collided with the Brooklyn Bridge while heading to Iceland. The vessel, carrying 277 crew members, suffered a mechanical failure that led to the crash. Eyewitness videos depicted sailors clinging to the masts as they were thrown into chaos. Sadly, two sailors were killed and 17 others injured, with emergency crews scrambling to ensure no one fell into the East River. The sound of the masts hitting the bridge was likened to a loud 'snap,' capturing the terror of the moment.
Emergency diving crews were sent in to check the water as a precaution, but remarkably, no one fell in, officials said.
The sound when the masts hit the bridge sounded like the loud snapping of a âbig twig,â said Nick Corso, who had his phone out to capture the boat as it passed under the bridge.
I didnât know what to think, I was like, is this a movie?,
The most critically injured sailors were up on the mast of the ship at the time of the crash, officials said.
