Grandfather fatally struck by Brooklyn hit-run driver had overcome addiction to become drug counselor
"A lot of the people that he helped recover came to his funeral. That just attests to the kind of person he was and the kind of effect that he had on their life."
"He wouldn't be able to eat, drink, talk, pee on his own. We didn't think it was any way for him to continue living. That's not what he would have wanted."
"For (my father) to go out that way, it just wasn't right, for the person to leave. I hope (the suspect) really gets his time in court and I hope the courts do the right thing."
Douglas Bradley, a 41-year-old social worker from Brooklyn, was fatally struck by a white sedan on December 21 in Sunset Park. Bradley had overcome his own addiction and devoted his career to counseling others struggling with substance abuse. He was hospitalized at NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn but remained unresponsive, leading his family to remove life support on January 2. Eric Rodriguez, 25, was arrested nearly two months after the incident for leaving the scene of a fatal accident. Rodriguez pleaded not guilty and was released without bail. Bradley's legacy was evident at his funeral, where many recovering addicts he had helped throughout his career came to pay respects.
