Residents report encampments and accumulated trash beneath the Coney Island Avenue overpass by Belt Parkway Exit 8. The location has been occupied by makeshift camps for years. Daily passersby encounter people drinking, using drugs, and loitering, which produces a pervasive feeling of unsafety among neighbors. Prior encampment sweeps did not produce lasting results because displaced individuals often returned or moved to more dangerous locations. City Council Member Inna Vernikov's office is coordinating with the Department of Transportation to install fencing at the site; procurement is underway and no installation timeline is available.
