Murad Awawdeh, president of the New York Immigration Coalition, highlights the escalating fear among immigrant communities in New York as federal immigration policies under the Trump administration intensify. Advocates point out that litigation has become a primary means of resistance against over 25 executive actions that threaten due process and sanctuary cities, increase surveillance and enforcement, and undermine support organizations for asylum seekers. The rising anxiety among immigrants is causing individuals to isolate themselves, impacting their daily lives significantly.
As enforcement actions increase, and when immigrants are picked up by federal agents and sent to distant deportation centers, advocates say fear is growing within immigrant communities.
Policies have ranged from increased immigration enforcement through the Department of Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Customs and Border Protection, and in certain areas, local law enforcement.
