Encampments and accumulated trash beneath the Coney Island Avenue overpass near Exit 8 of the Belt Parkway have persisted for years, creating visible makeshift camps and litter. Residents report frequent drinking, drug use, and loitering that undermines neighborhood safety and quality of life. Prior attempts to clear encampments proved ineffective, with people returning or relocating to even more dangerous locations. City Council Member Inna Vernikov is coordinating with the Department of Transportation to install fencing at the site, with the procurement process underway. A firm timeline for fence installation has not been established.
