""His broad background in canon law, and his pastoral heart is the perfect combination to build upon what Msgr. Aguggia has already accomplished.""
Father Peter Purpura assumed the role of chancellor for the Diocese of Brooklyn on Jan. 30, succeeding Msgr. Steven Aguggia. Purpura was ordained in 2007 and has served as Regional Episcopal Vicar for Queens West since 2023 and pastor at Our Lady of Hope since 2019. He previously served as vice chancellor (2016–2023), rector at St. James Cathedral Basilica (2015–2019), and parochial vicar in multiple parishes. He was named an FDNY Chaplain last year. The chancellor oversees recording ecclesiastical acts, decrees, dispensations, and diocesan records and archives and may advise the bishop. The Diocese serves 1.3 million Catholics across Brooklyn and Queens with 172 parishes and 63 elementary school academies.
