A $5,000 reward is offered for information on four suspects who impersonated NYPD officers during a bodega robbery in Brooklyn, forcing patrons to the ground. Surveillance footage captured the terrifying scene, but luckily, no injuries were reported. The United Bodegas of America is advocating for panic buttons in stores to protect workers from similar incidents, especially since funding for security measures has been inadequate following tragic events like the stabbing of Junior Guzman in 2018. Advocates insist on immediate action to protect local bodegas from becoming targets for crime.
"If we had panic buttons, these fake cops would be behind bars today. Our city's weak bail reforms have turned bodegas into hunting grounds for violent criminals," UBA spokesman Fernando Mateo said.
"The union says the latest incident underscores the need for panic buttons in these shops, and they plan to reiterate that to the governor."
"Since then, advocates have called for wider usage of panic buttons to be installed behind the counter. With one click, a deli worker could reach police immediately."
"Funding has long been an issue, and advocates say the few million dollars in state tax breaks allocated to small businesses to invest in security measures is insufficient."
