Dyker Heights Annual Christmas Lights Extravaganza
"When you go pay my mortgage, then I'll stop. If you don't like it, from December 1 to January 2, go on vacation because it's not stopping,"
"My husband passed on and made me promise him that it will continue and vice versa. I told him if anything ever happens to me, I wanted it to continue. My children know too that when I'm not here anymore, make sure this house gets decorated."
The Dyker Heights Christmas lights display centers between 83rd and 86th streets and 11th and 13th avenues and began in the 1980s when Lucy Spata decorated her home in memory of her mother. Neighbors expanded the tradition into elaborate installations featuring inflatables, nativity scenes, snowmen, and extensive lighting. The attraction draws massive crowds, guided tours, and seasonal vendors, while generating concerns about overcrowding, trash, and parking. Some homeowners invest tens of thousands of dollars and hire professional decorators. Snowfall enhances the wintry atmosphere and homeowners like Spata remain committed to continuing the displays each season.
