Bushwick's Queer Co-op is Rethinking What a Business Can Be
"When a friend asked for more details on this so-called co-op, Mustafa had to concede she was just kidding. Then the friend replied: 'I wish you weren't.'"
Mica Fisher and Hena Mustafa co-own BOYFRIEND Co-op, a queer bar and cafe in Bushwick that started from a joking idea about a lesbian co-op. Recognizing a lack of safe spaces for lesbians in NYC, they turned their light-hearted concept into reality with the help of fellow co-founders and a crowdfunding campaign. The establishment, which opened in March, faced challenges but found success during Pride Month through various events. As a co-op, all founders share equal pay and decision-making responsibilities, enhancing their collective experience in business ownership.
