Brooklyn Youth Programs at Risk After AmeriCorps Cuts
Briefly

In April, the Center for Family Life in Sunset Park faced drastic funding cuts totaling over $950,000 from the AmeriCorps program due to changes initiated by the Trump administration. This loss threatens to eliminate hundreds of after-school program slots, leaving families in need without care options. Volunteers are uncertain about receiving the college grants they were promised. The cuts disrupt a cycle of community service and leadership, as many beneficiaries of AmeriCorps often return to serve their communities, leading to broader social impacts, particularly among first-generation college students.
Without AmeriCorps, the center could lose hundreds of after-school program slots, a serious concern for families already on long waitlists for after-school care and summer camps.
For that generation, I think it could create some cynicism that they were cheated from something they were promised when they made this commitment.
