Brooklyn Youth Chorus honors Hank Gutman at gala

On May 1, the Brooklyn Youth Chorus hosted its Spring Gala at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, honoring Hank Gutman for his contributions to the community and the arts. Gutman, chair of the Navy Yard, has played a pivotal role in transforming it into a center of innovation and opportunity. The gala premiered 'Port(al)', an immersive production based on the history of the Navy Yard, emphasizing the importance of community, history, and the experiences of marginalized groups. Artistic Director Dianne Berken Menaker highlighted the personal narratives that emerge from understanding local history.
As chair of the Brooklyn Navy Yard, [Gutman] has helped transform this historic site into a thriving hub of innovation, creativity and opportunity.
Through the Navy Yard, choristers are learning about their own history, the history of the world, and the evolution of how marginalized groups have been treated in our society.
