Kevin Gavin, a 71-year-old Brooklyn handyman, was sentenced to 30 years to life in prison after pleading guilty to one count of first-degree murder and three counts of second-degree murder. Prosecutors said he targeted elderly women living in the Carter G. Woodson Houses on Powell Street between 2015 and 2021, where he also lived. Investigators said he gained access by building trust with neighbors and offering handyman services and help with errands. Authorities said he stabbed Myrtle McKinney in 2015, stomped Jacolia James in 2019, and strangled Juanita Caballero with a phone cord in 2021 while robbing her. After his arrest, he confessed and investigators linked the killings through shared circumstances and victim profiles.
"Police arrested Gavin on Jan. 21, 2021. Following his arrest, investigators said he confessed to all three killings and claimed the attacks stemmed from disputes over money he believed the victims owed him. Detectives linked Gavin to the earlier murders through similarities involving the victims' ages, living conditions, and the fact all three women lived inside the same NYCHA development where Gavin resided."
