Brooklyn Groups Secure Grants For Wildfire Response Efforts
Briefly

On November 9, 2024, a two-acre brush fire in Prospect Park was successfully contained by FDNY. In response to significant wildfire damage across NYC parks, including over 230 reported fires, the City Parks Foundation announced $140,000 in rapid response grants. The Marine Park Alliance and Prospect Park Alliance received funding for recovery, aiming to restore burned areas through native plantings and habitat stabilization. Executive Director Heather Lubov emphasized the importance of this funding for necessary restoration and encouraged further contributions to assist affected natural areas.
The Marine Park Alliance experienced fires across nearly six acres of preserved land. The organization will plant native shrubs and herbaceous material and remove invasive plants to favor the recruitment of native species.
The funding will be used to restore the burned areas, including site stabilization and native plantings. 'The recent and unprecedented wildfires critically damaged our city's essential park spaces, and this funding will help begin the necessary restoration,' said Heather Lubov.
